Service industries can improve operations managementWhen it comes to low-carbon initiatives, it is not just the technology and manufacturing industries that can make a difference, one expert has said.

Speaking at an industry gathering at the House of Lords this week, Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT Retail, claimed that by altering operations management service sector companies can also help the environment.

According to Edie.net, Mr Patterson claimed that too much focus is placed on improving manufacturing processes when the services industries also have a key role to play in combating the effects of climate change.

"Let''s make sure that we talk about manufacturing but we also seize the opportunity around services. There are as many opportunities around services as there are in manufacturing," he said.

Recent Office for National Statistics figures showing preliminary estimates for the UK''s gross domestic product in the first quarter revealed that the economy grew by 0.2 per cent in the period, being held back by a poor performance in the services sector.
