Concerns raised about UK service sector
11 January 2011
The service industry in the UK remains "fragile" this year, as the manufacturing sector continues to register strong growth, a report states.
According to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), this raises concerns about the sustainability of the UK's recovery from the global downturn, as the economy appears to have witnessed a slowdown in growth during the fourth quarter of 2010.
In its latest Quarterly Economic Survey, the organisation found service sector turnover confidence is higher year-on-year at +26 per cent, although it is below rates during 2010, while exports are returning to pre-recession levels.
The BCC has called on the government to support businesses in the UK in order to strengthen the economic recovery and ensure the private sector drives expansion as public sector cuts take effect.
"We must encourage more new start-ups, more employment, create stronger companies and support export potential," BCC director-general David Frost declared.
Individuals in the service sector planning to take an APICS qualification may also be interested to learn that the industry saw growth in activity and new orders during November, although confidence remained low, the most recent report from the CIPS and Markit indicated.
