Services sector ''facing a challenge''
9 February 2010
The latest data for the services sector indicates that it is suffering "but that could be due to external factors", an expert claims.
According to British Chambers of Commerce chief economist David Kern the recent purchasing managers'' index (PMI) shows that results are good for manufacturing "but less so than services".
This highlights the importance of services firms employing operations management in order to enhance efficiencies, although Mr Kern added that recovery can be sustained.
He suggested "it is early days and it will be a challenge" and stimulus measures should remain in place until 2011 to help small businesses to increase their confidence levels, something that may interest those considering operations training courses.
The PMI for the services sector dipped in January this year to 54.5, with the freezing weather and the increase in VAT undermining expansion.
However, the Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index has shown that optimism among firms rose in January by three points to 73, almost double the figure of 39 recorded for the same month of 2009.
