Private sector ''needs to respond to public spending cuts''
10 September 2010
The decision by the coalition to cut public spending budgets will require private businesses to provide support, an expert has stated.
Speaking to the annual CBI Scotland dinner, chairman of the organisation Linda Urquhart declared that bosses need to assist national local government in making "the radical change necessary to restore equilibrium, although that may take several years".
Those in both public sector and services industry operations management may also be interested in her assertion that state bodies will become increasingly reliant on enterprises for the delivery of services and new partnerships should be created to facilitate this.
Ms Urquhart, chief executive of Morton Fraser, added during her address to the event at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow that the focus should be on reducing regulation and bureaucracy and spending more carefully.
Recent data from the Office for National Statistics showed that public sector employment rose in some parts of the UK and fell in others during the first quarter of 2010 as the effects of the recession were felt.
