Higher public sector jobs cuts may affect operations managementOperations management professionals within the public sector may have to reassess their strategies as new figures show more jobs have been lost in the field than anticipated.

This is according to figures from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which has carried out research showing that one year on from the government's spending review, the pace of cuts in the public sector labour market has been "larger and faster than expected".

Local authorities in England have been particularly affected by the reductions in workforces, with a total contraction of the public sector workforce between December 2009 and June 2011 of 290,000.

A total of 111,000 of these cuts occurred in the second quarter of this year, as losses outstripped employment gains in the private sector.

"Rising demand for public services, reduced government spending and the need for a leaner and more efficient public sector mean that public service reform is central to the coalition's agenda," advised PwC partner and head of public sector Paul Cleal.

Elsewhere in the public sector, continuous improvement will be a key focus of the new head of the NHS Commissioning Board, which has now been announced by health secretary Andrew Lansley to be Professor Malcolm Grant.ADNFCR-3058-ID-800770304-ADNFCR
