Government unveils proposals for patient-led NHS operations managementPlans to introduce changes to operations management within the NHS in England in order to provide greater patient choice have been unveiled.

Announced by health secretary Andrew Lansley, the proposals regarding referrals and information about NHS providers are a response to research indicating this is what members of the public want in terms of their treatment.

According to the poll, more than 80 per cent of respondents stated they wanted choice in the health service and almost three-quarters wanted to select which consultant provides their hospital care.

Commenting on the plans, which could come into force from April 2012, Mr Lansley said: "We know that transparency can drive up standards of care and improve services for patients and that's what this is all about."

The survey of 5,000 individuals about NHS healthcare also discovered that patient choice is of particular importance for older people and women, something that operations management professionals in the sector may wish to bear in mind.

Members of the House of Lords have been debating the government's healthcare modernisation bill for England this week.ADNFCR-3058-ID-800755950-ADNFCR
