Councils ''should be innovative with money''
26 October 2010
Local authorities should adopt a fresh approach to spending following the announcement of government cuts to public sector funding, it has been claimed.
According to the UK's secretary of state for communities and local government, Eric Pickles, councils will need to alter the way in which they deliver services in order to maximise the potential of the money they have following the government cuts.
Those concerned with operations management may be interested in his assertion that local authorities should be "innovative" in order to protect frontline services and take advantage of greater freedoms being offered to them.
Meanwhile, a poll conducted by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) ahead of the announcement of the results of the Spending Review discovered that 85 per cent of public sector managers do not feel there is room for efficiency savings in their operations, despite planned cuts.
The ILM study also showed that more than two out of three respondents admitted to not being fully prepared to cope with their budgets being reduced.
