PM announces changes to nursing operations managementDavid Cameron has revealed new proposals to alter the way in which operations management is carried out in the nursing sector.

The prime minister stated that a greater focus is required on quality and nursing care in order to benefit staff, patients and relatives.

Making the announcement alongside health secretary Andrew Lansley, he stated: "The whole approach to caring in this country needs to be reset. And it needs to start with this simple fact. Caring for patients is what nurses do. Everything else comes second."

Mr Cameron added that the Time to Care initiative from the NHS Institute will help to free up nurses' time to spend more of it on frontline activities, with suggestions including the appointment of senior ward nurses and patient-led inspections.

A red-tape challenge is also being launched to identify excessive bureaucracy that is preventing nurses from spending time with patients.

Responding to the government's new continuous improvement proposals, the Royal College of Nursing stated that staff in the field "want to care for people" and have stressed the need for a reduction in unnecessary paperwork to be reduced.ADNFCR-3058-ID-801258509-ADNFCR
