Prevention services ''could reduce annual care bill''The level of public money spent on care and support services in the UK could be reduced through the implementation of innovative new technologies, it has been claimed.

Care services minister Phil Hope explained that assistive devices such as sensors and detectors could ensure that older people do not have to be taken into residential care.

Such operations management strategies may be employed by the Department of Health to improve and reduce the costs of services, as Mr Hope revealed during a visit to a "wise home" in Harrogate.

Simply introducing Telecare could save the country an estimated £2 billion a year and the minister stated that the government is prepared a blueprint for a new "simple and affordable" national care system where "perosnalised services will be a central pillar".

Innovations that could be employed across the service include sensors that switch on lights when people get out of bed, devices that detect flooding and temperature monitoring to ensure homes do not become to hot or cold.

Those concerned with continuous improvement within the public sector may also like to note that the police service is aiming to deliver savings of at least £545 million by carrying out reforms.ADNFCR-3058-ID-19610914-ADNFCR
