Call for changes to hospital operations management
30 December 2011
More needs to be done to improve operations management in hospitals, one leading expert has declared.
Mike Farrar, head of the NHS Confederation in England, explained that 2012 will be marked by the need to make efficiency savings.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4, he pointed out that one way of modernising the service and implementing continuous improvement could be to treat more individuals at home, advocating a more community-based service.
According to Mr Farrar, at least one in four patients could be looked after in their own properties by NHS staff and it can benefit some people to have the length of hospital stays reduced.
"Hospitals play a vital role but we do rely on them for some services which could be provided elsewhere," the specialist suggested.
The Department of Health recently published the NHS Atlas of Variation, which examined spending and patient outcomes across the country's Primary Care Trusts.
