NHS long-term care operations management plans unveiledLong-term care proposals, part of efforts by the Department of Health to enhance operations management within the NHS, have been unveiled.

Under the plans, services for those people with long-term conditions could undergo continuous improvement by rolling out innovative work taking place across the organisation.

By adopting new systems nationwide, it is thought that the number of unnecessary trips to hospital and hospital bed days could be substantially reduced and the lives of more than 15 million patients improved.

They will include measures to lower the number of emergency episodes and could deliver frontline savings of £2.2 million, which would be reinvested in the NHS.

Commenting on the modernisation proposals, heath secretary Andrew Lansley said the new approach will enable clinicians to "take the lead locally in developing health services" and permit them to find new approaches to problems.

However, Labour's shadow health secretary John Healey recently cautioned that changes being made to NHS spending policies by the coalition government may increase the health gap between rich and poor areas of the country.ADNFCR-3058-ID-800675147-ADNFCR
