Health sector to adopt lean principles regarding medicine wastage
9 August 2011
The UK's health sector is planning to adopt operations management principles with regard to medicine wastage in order to reduce spending.
An estimated £300 million lost annually throughout the NHS could be recovered by implementing lean techniques, according to the Department of Health.
There were more than 900 million prescription items dispensed in 2010 and the government is providing support to the health services to deliver efficiency savings between now and 2015 to ensure unnecessary wastage in this area is curbed.
Health minister Lord Howe, who announced the plans, stated: "By reducing medicine wastage the NHS will save money that can be spent in other areas of patient care."
Measures are also being put in place to ensure people take their medicines properly in order to reduce the more than £500 million wasted each year in this area.
Also in the NHS, proposals were recently announced for long-term care as part of efforts to roll out innovative new systems in this area across the health service.
