A&E quality data could inform operations managementOperations management professionals working in the NHS could employ new quality statistics for accident and emergency (A&E) departments in order to enhance their strategies.

The A&E data are the first of their kind to be released by the Department for Health and are intended to improve the transparency of services by using eight clinical quality indicators developed by senior clinicians.

Rather than a single standard based on the time in which patients are seen, A&E performance is now rated against a series of measures that include the number of people leaving hospitals without being seen, those who have to attend again within a week and initial assessment times.

"The figures published today will help the NHS drive up the standards of care, improve patients' experience and shine a light on where A&Es can improve," Mr Lansley declared.

Figures relating to MRSA cases were recently improved by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Nottinghamshire, which reported that it had seen a total of 500 consecutive days without a case occurring as a result of continuous improvement efforts. ADNFCR-3058-ID-800713560-ADNFCR
