Governments ''should adopt radical public sector cost approach''A "radical" approach should be adopted by governments around the world to reduce the cost of delivering public services.

This is the view expressed in a new report from analyst Gartner, which advocates employing more innovative and less "traditional" ways of cutting budget deficits.

According to the study, which may be of interest to operations management professionals in the public sector, uncertain economic conditions require new means to generate the required sustainable savings in the wake of the global downturn.

"The aftermath of the most recent global financial crisis, the sluggish recovery in some countries and the significant level of debt require continued and increasing cost-containment discipline," Gartner vice-president Andrea Di Maio stated.

The company recommends that areas such as e-government, workforce management, crowdsourcing, cloud services, linking interoperability frameworks, portfolio management and IT initiatives offer opportunities to cut spending.

For example, the UK government recently launched a scheme aimed at providing NHS employees with an opportunity to improve patient treatment as part of the Big Society concept.ADNFCR-3058-ID-800022979-ADNFCR
