UK manufacturers continuing to predict output growth
23 September 2011
Manufacturers in Britain are forecasting an increase in output over the next quarter, a new survey indicates.
Research by the Confederation of British Industry may be of interest to manufacturing management professionals, as it shows that companies in the sector remain optimistic, despite a contraction in new orders over September.
According to the business organisation, the balance of orders above normal stood at minus nine per cent in its latest industrial trends poll, although this is higher than a long-term average of minus 18 per cent.
Of the 470 respondents to the survey, the balance predicting rising output during the next three months stood at plus nine per cent, while those questioned stated that stock levels remained strong in September and pricing pressures climbed slightly.
CBI chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty suggested the slowdown in demand may have been linked to uncertainty in global financial markets.
The Purchasing Managers' Index for UK manufacturing contracted during August this year, data from Markit and the CIPS indicated as domestic demand was subdued and business conditions deteriorated.
