Scotland defies UK manufacturing downturn
13 September 2011
Despite sluggish performance in the overall UK manufacturing industry, Scotland appears to be faring better, a new report reveals.
In news that may be welcome by those involved in manufacturing management in Scotland, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the country shows it saw production in the sector rise at its fastest rate in four months.
Furthermore, the latest report from Bank of Scotland and Markit reveals growth of new business reached a four-month high, although there was a slight drop in private sector jobs from July.
"There was a particularly welcome rise in new export orders which extended the current sequence of growth to ten months," revealed Bank of Scotland chief economist Donald MacRae.
Service sector activity affected the overall rate of growth, which slowed in August to deliver a PMI reading of 52.7, down from 53.5 the previous month.
Data from Markit and the CIPS for August showed that the UK as a whole witnessed a contraction in activity during the month, with output driven down by a weakening of export orders.
