Manufacturing industry ''needs support despite signs of growth''
10 November 2011
Although the UK manufacturing sector has witnessed growth and remains in positive territory, more still needs to be done to ensure it stays there.
In comments that may be of interest to operations management professionals, the chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has declared that the "modest" rise in output during September 2011 was "better than many expected".
David Kern was commenting on new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which has showed that manufacturing output climbed month-on-month from August by 0.2 per cent, marking a two per cent rise over the year.
However, Mr Kern explained that "the sector does face difficult challenges", in part because of tough conditions in the eurozone and government austerity measures in Britain.
He added: "The Autumn Statement at the end of this month will provide the Chancellor with a prime opportunity to introduce more policies to support growth."
The BCC expert was commenting as the ONS revealed that seasonally-adjusted output climbed in the UK during September 2011, despite no change from August in overall production figures.
