Wage agreements ''constrained by need to control costs''
24 May 2011
Pay settlements within the manufacturing industry are being influenced by "economic uncertainty and the need for companies to control their costs in the face of global pressures", it has been claimed.
This is according to EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, with the body's chief economist Lee Hopley explaining there is little upward pressure on wages in the sector at present.
Ms Hopley was commenting on figures from EEF and JAM Recruitment showing there has been a slight rise in pay settlements over the three months to the end of April this year.
However, the 2011 data indicates average growth was 2.5 per cent during the quarter, 0.1 point higher than the rise for the three months to March 2011, with most agreements below three per cent and 14 per cent of firms continuing to improve wage freezes.
Manufacturing management professionals are advised the Confederation of British Industry has reported the sector is predicting strong increases in output during the next three months, with export order books improving in May.
