UK manufacturing index rises in March

The latest official figures reveal a climb in the manufacturing index by 3.3 per cent year-on-year during March.
It contributed to a two per cent climb over the 12 months to March 2010 of two per cent in seasonally adjusted industrial output in Britain.
According to the Office for National Statistics'' data, nine out a total of 13 sub-sectors in manufacturing witnessed growth during the period in question, with the highest rise of 16.9 per cent recorded by the transport equipment industries.
The strong performance of the transport equipment sector was boosted by a 52.3 per cent gain in motor vehicles production.
In addition, production and inventory control professionals may also be interested in a climb of 4.6 per cent within basic metals and metal products manufacturing, with the cutlery, tools and general hardware sector performing particularly well.
Further growth may be seen in output as a new report has revealed year-on-year home sales of manufactured products rose by 5.7 per cent in April, expanding from a five per cent rise in March.
