Manufacturing activity rises further in UK
11 March 2011
The year to January 2011 saw a 6.8 per cent increase in manufacturing output within the UK.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the industry witnessed a year-on-year rise on a seasonally-adjusted basis, with demand planning specialists advised that production was higher in 12 out of 13 sub-sectors.
Manufacturing expansion was boosted in particular by strong growth in the fields of electrical and optical equipment, which saw output stand 14.6 per cent higher during the 12 months in question.
Additionally, there was a 12 per cent climb in the transport production field, with particularly strong growth in motor vehicle and engine parts manufacturing.
Meanwhile, the ONS revealed the overall Index of Production was 4.4 per cent higher during the year in question, as the mining and quarrying market dipped by 4.8 per cent and electricity, gas and water supply remained stable.
The Purchasing Managers' Index for manufacturing in the UK was a record 61.5 during February 2011, with any figure above 50 indicative of growth.
