Work starts on Teeside advanced manufacturing facility
12 March 2010
The expansion of an industrial biotechnology demonstrator, that will help in advancing and improving manufacturing processes, has begun in Wilton, Teeside.
The government has invested £12 million in the hope that the facility will bring continuous improvement to the development of novel and more sustainable advanced manufacturing and process technologies.
Business minister Ian Lucas attended the ceremony for the expansion that should enable the UK to compete in a market sector that is forecast to experience rapid growth in the next 15 years.
Mr Lucas indicated the government''s awareness of the role UK manufacturing would play in the nation''s economic growth.
"Here in the north east the regional strengths in industrial biotechnology, plastic electronics and advanced manufacturing will help the UK achieve its goal of economic growth and a low carbon economy", Mr Lucas added.
On Friday (March 12th), Lord Mandelson was in Manchester to discuss the government policy on regional economic investment.
