Manufacturing The manufacturing sector in Britain is "critical" to ensuring that the economy recovers from the downturn, one expert has declared.

According to head of programmes at the Manufacturing Institute Adam Buckley, the latest purchasing managers'' index (PMI) is "encouraging" and highlights the important role played by production, "particularly in improving the balance of trade through export".

He praised government efforts to provide support to manufacturers and stated he hoped this approach would be continued by whichever party wins the forthcoming general election.

However, Mr Buckley also noted that firms in the construction and automotive sectors "are still struggling", something that may prompt those involved in operations management to seek new ways of improving manufacturing processes.

Foreign exports from Britain have been boosted by the relative weakness of sterling compared with other currencies and the most recently released PMI revealed that the UK''s manufacturing industry witnessed its strongest growth in 15 years this February.ADNFCR-3058-ID-19658238-ADNFCR
