UK production sector ''on a path of recovery''
21 June 2010
The manufacturing industry in Britain is continuing to recover from the downturn, although figures from June saw a slight dip from highs recorded in May.
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the balance of companies claiming total orders had risen above normal levels was -23, compared with -18 per cent in May.
However, this is broadly in line with a long-term mean of -18 per cent and provides evidence that the "improving trend of recent months continues", with export orders remaining steady as a result of the improving global situation and the weak value of sterling.
"The manufacturing sector remains on a path of recovery, with conditions much improved on just a few months ago," CBI chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty stated.
With conditions improving, firms may now wish to invest in operations management in order to further enhance efficiencies within their businesses, particularly as the CBI data revealed a net 15 per cent of respondents expecting to increase production over the next quarter.
The statistics reflect a recent report from the Office for National Statistics, which showed a slight monthly fall in production output during April 2010.
