UK ''dips in global manufacturing index'' The ability of the UK to compete internationally in terms of production has been called into question by a new report.

According to the latest global manufacturing index from business advisory specialist Deloitte, the country has been placed at number 17 in a list of the most dominant nations in the field.

Developing nations dominated the top of the table, with China, India and the Republic of Korea the highest rated countries for competitiveness.

However, in relation to these, western Europe, the UK, Japan and the US are expected to witness a decline over the coming five years, with Britain forecast to fall from 17th to 20th place in the list.

Ranking the most significant drivers of the production market, Deloitte placed talent-led innovation in pole position, while UK operations management professionals may be interested to note that Germany and the US are included in the top ten.

David Raistrick, the firm''s UK manufacturing leader, suggested this is evidence that "the drivers of competitiveness are not just cost-based."

In related news, a report from the Advanced Institute of Management Research is aiming to challenge common myths about the production industry in order to better promote its benefits.ADNFCR-3058-ID-19866003-ADNFCR
