Decline noted in UK manufacturing growth
1 July 2011
The pace of expansion of the UK's manufacturing industry slowed during June 2011, new figures show.
According to the latest purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the sector, activity dipped over the month to a 21-month low.
Operations management professionals are also advised that the measures showed there were contractions in new orders and the pace of employment growth alongside the dip in overall PMI from a revised 52 in May to 51.3 in June.
However, with any figure above 50 representative of an increasing market, manufacturing activity continues to rise, although it is falling back from highs reached at the start of 2011 as a result of slowing overseas business.
Production growth in June may have been bolstered by activity prompted by new product launches, fewer bank holidays and companies clearing backlogs of work.
Commenting on the data, senior economist at Markit Rob Dobson said: "It looks as if manufacturing has entered a slower growth phase which could be with us for some time."
The figures from Markit and the CIPS come after research from GE indicated that high-tech manufacturers are currently cautious about investing in the expansion of their operations.
