Concerns raised over engineering skills threat
23 January 2012
A series of fears have been raised by industry experts about the future of engineering skills in Britain.
In a letter addressed to the Daily Telegraph, 16 companies that are reliant on such talents warned that the government needs to take action to ensure technical training is available to young people.
This could include operations training courses and qualifications such as a CPIM exam, with the firms insisting that efforts are required to make careers in manufacturing and engineering more attractive.
Institution of Engineering and Technology president Mike Short wrote it is "widely recognised as a significant route to providing the crucial technical and practical skills that young people will need to build a Britain that can compete effectively and internationally".
Businesses backing the communication included Siemens, Sony, Boeing, JCB and Toshiba, with senior executives claiming to be "surprised and stunned" at proposals that the Engineering Diploma, introduced in 2008, is downgraded from being worth five GCSEs to one.
The letter follows a call by the Trades Union Congress for the UK to adopt a similar approach to manufacturing to Germany and prioritise medium-sized companies in order to rebalance the economy and provide greater support for industry.
