Localised production ''could improve manufacturing processes''
26 February 2010
Reducing ton mileage by localising production and distribution warehouses can help to improve manufacturing processes.
This is according to Alan Francis, transport spokesperson for the Green Party of England and Wales.
He said nowadays the process is centralised, leading to some products making needless trips up and down the country.
However, a common facility in each city or town would be useful in getting significant amounts of freight off the road and increasing efficiency.
"The government has put forward grants for the building of rail terminals for loading and unloading of containers, but this is pretty small scale. We need to do something on a far larger scale," Mr Francis stated.
His comments follow a recent IGD report showing that 124 million HGV miles have been removed from the nation''s transport network thanks to the Efficient Consumer Response UK Sustainable Distribution initiative.
This target was reached a year earlier than forecast.
