UK manufacturing management to benefit from £125m supply chain boostOperations management experts in the UK's advanced manufacturing sector have learned that the government is committing £125 million to boost the effectiveness of supply chains in the sector.

According to business secretary Vince Cable, who made the announcement, the cash will "gain maximum value for the UK by ensuring our suppliers are in the best position possible to compete" following recent logistics shocks such as the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and ash clouds.

Under the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative, which will start accepting applications early next year, manufacturing management operations will be provided with funding to help them achieve world class standards in this area.

The money is also expected to help encourage major new suppliers to move to the UK and enhance the global competitiveness of industries such as automotive, chemicals, energy renewables and aerospace.

In recent comments on the UK manufacturing industry, EEF chief economist Lee Hopley stated that the crisis in Europe is affecting the sector by dampening exports, although demand appears to be "reasonably firm" in places such as India, China and South America.ADNFCR-3058-ID-801231942-ADNFCR
