Production reduced as demand falls at home and abroadUK manufacturers cut back on production during November this year as levels of demand fell.

This is according to the latest Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the industry, which shows both domestic and export orders declined over the month from October.

Operations management professionals may be interest in the Markit and CIPS data showing that the sector contracted for the second month in a row, dropping to 47.6 in November from 47.8 in October.

Manufacturing activity fell to a "near two-and-a-half year low" over the period in question and companies cut back on the workforces as economic uncertainty affected the industry.

A sharp decline in output was recorded among consumer goods producers and smaller contractions within the investment and intermediate goods sectors.

Markit senior economist Rob Dobson remarked: "The lack of new work is forcing manufacturers to rely on previously-placed orders to avoid sharper cutbacks in output and employment. This cannot go on indefinitely."

Meanwhile, Markit's manufacturing PMI for the Eurozone fell to a 28-month low in November, as production and new orders declines accelerated and further job losses took place.ADNFCR-3058-ID-801227050-ADNFCR
