Figures show weakening of UK manufacturing output
9 December 2011
Efforts to adjust manufacturing management to the increasingly challenging economic climate could be accelerated following new official data.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there was a 1.7 per cent year-on-year decline in production during the period to October 2011.
In addition, the seasonally-adjusted Index of Manufacturing dropped by 0.7 per cent between September and October this year and the Index of Production by the same amount.
However, manufacturing remained 0.3 per cent higher year-on-year for the 12 months in question.
It is the first quarterly decline in the industry for two years and Capital Economics UK economist Samuel Tombs told the Independent it suggests "the risk that the overall economy re-enters recession in the fourth quarter remains high".
EEF, the manufacturers' organisation has recently suggested that divergence within the UK sector is becoming more acute, something that could assist operations management experts in planning for the future.
