Lack of knowledge ''preventing take-up of automation''Major reasons preventing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from adopting automation technology include a lack of knowledge and skills.

This is according to a study carried out in the UK, which found another barrier to take-up is a cautious approach to risk among such firms.

The report commissioned by members of the Engineering and Machinery Alliance suggests companies in Britain are lagging behind their counterparts elsewhere in Europe in terms of their implementation of modern manufacturing technologies.

Supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and members of the British Automation and Robot Association, the research warns UK manufacturers need to do more to ensure they are competing internationally and their operations are sustainable.

Manufacturing management professionals are advised the report notes successful application of automation can drive down costs, reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and boost quality.

In related news, a recent survey by the British Chambers of Commerce found companies in the sector want the government to provide greater support to enable them to export products overseas.ADNFCR-3058-ID-800316485-ADNFCR
