British manufacturers are cutting their carbon emissions and boosting green performance, with over half having taken action to do so.

This is according to new figures showing incentives and rewards rather than regulations encourage producers to alter their operations management procedures to address climate change.

A report by EEF explained that major drivers for green policies included customer requirement and adhering to environmental management systems.

The 2009 Environment Survey also revealed just one in ten respondents had seen sustainability issues fall in priority as a result of the recession, while one in three measure their carbon output although they are not required to do so.

"Policy must focus on encouraging companies to take a proactive approach to produce results and reward early action," EEF climate and environment policy head Gareth Stace said.

Manufacturing management professionals may also be interested to note that Reuters recently reported the US manufacturing industry is embracing lean concepts in order to compete more effectively with producers in countries such as China.ADNFCR-3058-ID-19535593-ADNFCR
