June 2011 witnesses year-on-year manufacturing increase
10 August 2011
The UK saw manufacturing output rise over the year to June 2011, official figures reveal.
Operations management professionals have learnt that the latest Index of Production from the Office for National Statistics shows a 0.3 per cent fall on a seasonally-adjusted basis during the 12 months.
However, the manufacturing measure for the period in question expanded by 2.1 per cent, the 17th such rise in a row.
A less optimistic picture of manufacturing output was revealed between May and June 2011, with activity declining by 0.4 per cent, pushed down by a drop in production of transport equipment and paper, printing and publishing and offset by growth in output of textiles, leather and clothing.
This is in line with the Purchasing Managers' Index for the sector from Markit and the CIPS, which fell between June and July 2011 to below the 50 mark signifying expansion to stand at 49.1, suggesting its first contraction in two years.
