Strong UK manufacturing growth continues
4 August 2010
July witnessed a rise in manufacturing output in the UK for the tenth consecutive month, new figures have revealed.
Markit''s Purchasing Managers'' Index (PMI) for the period stood at 57.3, a slight decline from June''s 57.6 total, with any figure above 50 representing growth.
The dip in activity was slower than anticipated and new orders continued to expand during the month, with strong demand from the US and Asia offsetting a decline in orders from Europe.
Jobs increased in the field and volumes of new business remained strong, with the pace of growth in the industry expected to remain steady as it recovers from the effects of the economic downturn.
However, there was a slowdown in export orders over July, as overseas demand for products contracted, something that could affect operations management activities.
Meanwhile, another report by Markit for KPMG has predicted that employment will expand strongly within the manufacturing sector over the next 12 months.
