Demand for UK manufactured goods rises
20 August 2010
The balance of UK manufacturers reporting a rise in total orders compared with those claiming them to be below average has reached its highest level since August 2008, it has been reported.
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), demand for goods improved, taking the index to a balance of -14 per cent, two points higher than the -16 per cent recorded in July.
Those concerned with production and inventory control may be interested in the latest monthly Industrial Trends Survey from the organisation, which reveals that export order books strengthened significantly over the period - rising from a balance of -12 per cent in July to -1 per cent this month.
August 2010 also saw 30 per cent of respondents forecast a rise in production during the coming quarter, compared with 20 per cent predicting a fall, while prices are also anticipated to increase over the period.
"Prospects for the manufacturing sector remain very positive," CBI head of economic analysis Lai Wah Co remarked. "Demand is steadily improving, helped by the revival of export orders after some weakness last month."
Manufacturing management specialists are also advised that the Office for National Statistics' Index of Production for June revealed a 4.1 per cent jump in total manufacturing output, with nine out of 13 sub-sectors witnessing rises.
