North-west manufacturing and service sectors continue resurgence
11 April 2011
The north-west's manufacturing and service sectors have continued their recent resurgence, a new report has shown.
According to Lloyds TSB's North West Business Activity Index, private sector output increased at its fastest rate in ten months in March.
The index increased to 58.1 from 56.2 in February, with gains in new work, employment and output outstripping those of the UK as a whole.
Leigh Taylor, area director for Lloyds TSB Commercial in the north-west, said that inflation continues to weigh on manufacturers but they are continuing to press ahead nonetheless.
"Manufacturing remains the principal driver of expansion, despite a stronger contribution from the services sector in March," he added.
A recent report from the British Chambers of Commerce highlighted the pressures being put on manufacturers by the rising costs of raw materials.
In addition, many firms are struggling with cash flow issues, which is denting overall confidence, the organisation's Quarterly Economic Survey revealed.
