Manufacturing firms ''reporting cost pressures''
7 April 2011
The rising cost of raw materials is placing additional pressure on manufacturing businesses in the UK to increase their prices, a new report suggests.
Research by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) also found cashflow problems are being experienced by some companies following the recession.
In its most recent Quarterly Economic Survey, the organisation warns that confidence has fallen in the sector and the recovery remains fragile, with businesses experiencing disruptions in recent months from severe winter weather conditions.
The UK economy is returning to growth in the wake of the global downturn and manufacturing exports have been strong, but the BCC study cautions that a "difficult economic environment" is in place, as spending cuts take effect and firms are affected by the rise in VAT rates at the start of 2011.
Those concerned with sales and operation planning may be interested in comments from BCC chief economist David Kern that: "The international background has become riskier for Britain's exporters, while the domestic austerity plan will intensify pressures on businesses and consumers."
Recent figures from the CIPS and Markit showed there was a slight slowdown in manufacturing activity during March 2011 compared with the previous month.
