Janez Potocnik has declared such practices can deliver a greener economy in addition to reducing costs as part of a programme of continuous improvement within businesses.

Addressing delegates in the Hague, Mr Potocnik stated: "A resource efficient outlook would mean looking at new practices and new business models, which could make the best use of and recover value from the waste we can''t avoid producing".

He also called for measures to go beyond reducing energy consumption and eco-innovation in order to deliver substantial cuts in the level of resources used within the European Union.
