ROME FAQ

Technical : Questions about using the ROME programme

Will ROME work on Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP?
  • Yes. It has been tested with all of these operating systems. Some users with XP Service Pack 2 have experienced some difficulties with pop-up blocking. This issue is resolved by changing your Internet Explorer settings. See this file for more detail.

Will ROME work on an Apple Mac?
  • No. ROME only runs on Windows based operating systems.

When I put the ROME CD into my CD drive, it does not self-start.

  •   In My Computer, navigate to the file called intro.exe
  •   Double click intro.exe This will start the ROME CD with the normal startup screen.
  •   If this fails, email: romesupport@iomnet.org.uk - you may have a faulty CD.
My computer system won't let me install the required plug-ins.

  • You are probably using an office PC and do not have installation rights. You will need to ask your IT department to install the plug-ins for you.

Will ROME work with both the Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers?
  •   Yes. But it is designed for Internet Explorer 4 or higher and works better in that browser.
The animated graphics in the ROME Handbook won't work.
  • Make sure you have installed the Shockwave Flash plug-in or reinstall the plug-in.
  • If this fails, email: romesupport@iomnet.org.uk - you may have a faulty CD.

When I try to enter the CD I get a message to say the 'active content has been blocked'.
  • Since the ROME CD was first introduced there have been a number of updates to MS Windows and MS Internet Explorer, both in the terms of MS Service Packs (SP) and later versions of both MS Windows and MS Office.  As a result you may experience some difficulties with pop-up blockers and message bars. Most of these problems occur if you have installed Windows XP SP2, but will also appear if you are running MS Office 2003. Click here for a full explanation of how to fix this issue.

I cannot access the virtual factory even though I have installed both the plugins.
  • Make sure you have installed the Viscape plug-in or re-install the plug-in.
  • If it still does not work what is probably happening is that the settings on your PC/Laptop need altering.  Click here for a full explanation to fix this issue.
  • If this fails, email: romesupport@iomnet.org.uk - you may have a faulty CD.
I can't see all of ROME on my PC screen. Or ROME appears too small on my screen.
  •   Your screen resolution is set too low or too high. From your Windows Control Panel, click the Display icon and find Settings. Change your resolution to 800 x 600 - the ideal resolution for viewing ROME.
When I check my answers in a do-it-yourself exercise - I know I am right but the programme tells me I am wrong.
  •   For all do-it-yourself exercises - please read the instructions carefully.
  •   If you are doing a calculation - round your answer to the number of decimal places required in the instructions.
Can I buy a printed copy of the ROME Handbook?
  •   No. There are over 500 "screens" in the ROME Handbook and most of them would require at least two pages of A4 to print. Also, by printing out the pages, you would lose the interactive element of ROME.
Can I print pages from ROME?
  • Yes, you can print from the ROME Handbook, which contains the course content. However, because ROME benefits from interactive and multi-media technology - it is designed for the screen, not for the printed page.
  • You can not print ROME's animated graphics or scenes from the virtual factory.
When I print pages from the ROME Handbook, my printer cuts off the edge of the page.
  • Change your Print Orientation to Landscape. Right click anywhere on the page. From the pop-up menu, click Print. From the Print menu, click Properties and then under Orientation, click Landscape.
How long does it take to complete the ROME programme?

  • ROME is a flexible distance learning programme. The minimum time anyone has taken to complete the Certificate in Operations Management using the ROME package is around 4 months.
