I am a Supply Chain Consultant working with a Distribution Warehouse that has a unique part numbering challenge.
They want to keep one part number for four variations in length of fabric rolls to enable them to track the sales history of these part numbers.
My challenge is to cycle count in their warehouse and show counts for these varying lengts to see if they match the on hand balance for the one part number in the software system, NetSuite.
I've always recommended changing the part number for any form, fit or function variation but this Distributor says that this is an "industry wide" situation?
How can you obtain accuracy in the warehouse when those lenghts do not equate to the part number in the on hand balance in the software system. My goal, of course, is to have the warehouse on hand inventory =the on hand balance in NetSuite.
Is a label for the fabric rolls in the warehouse the answer? Is bar coding the only answer? RFID tags? They will not agree to a A,B,C,D addition to the part number to account for these four lenghts in the warehouse.
Is there ANY answer to this challenge?
Thank you for any help you can give me.

With the same code for different lengths, the stock balancing could be on the aggregate stock of all the different lengths.
One way to have differentiated stock is to have different locations for different lengths and have stock tallied at different location
Hope this is feasible
